When Are Tooth Extractions Necessary?

If a tooth is looking a little worse for wear, we don’t immediately jump to an extraction. We’ll only recommend removal in the following situations:

  • The enamel is so damaged that the tooth can’t support a crown or filling
  • A deep fracture goes beneath the gum line
  • Gum disease has weakened the root and bone, making the tooth unstable
  • The teeth are impacted and putting pressure on the nearby ones (often the case with the wisdom teeth)
  • Failing teeth are removed to create room for a denture or other prosthetic

How We Handle Tooth Extractions

There are multiple types of extractions, and the particular one a patient needs depends on their situation and the reason the tooth needs to come out.

If it is fully erupted and too decayed to be restored, a simple extraction involves numbing the area and essentially wiggling the tooth with a special instrument until it slips out on its own. For a severely broken tooth, it may need to be removed more carefully and in pieces.

Sometimes, we choose to remove a few failing teeth to make space for a denture, which will help it fit more evenly and be more stable.

Lastly, a surgical extraction is reserved for teeth that are still stuck within the gums and jaw but cause issues like pain and bite misalignment. This most often stems from the wisdom teeth, and in many cases, we can complete the procedure in-house so a patient can avoid a referral.
