Do I Have Gum Disease?

Gum disease is subtle. It’s not like tooth decay, where it can lead to sharp pain or a noticeable dark spot. Often, the initial signs create no discomfort. Maybe your gums look a little swollen and tend to bleed whenever you brush and floss. Your gums might recede, and your breath never seems to smell good. Left untreated, the teeth might start to feel loose, but thankfully, early intervention can stop this from happening.
Scaling & Root Planing

These two procedures are paired together to form a “deep cleaning,” which can help reverse early-stage gum disease and help the mouth recover from any damage the infection has already caused. First, the buildup of bacteria is removed from the roots of the teeth below the gum line. Then, the roots of the teeth are gently reshaped and smoothed. This reduces the surface area that bacteria can cling to, lowering the chances of reinfection, while also enabling the gums to heal and reestablish the support they give the teeth.
Laser Periodontal Treatment

If a patient’s gum disease is somewhat advanced, present throughout the entire mouth, or if they have particularly sensitive gums, then laser treatment is a valuable option. Rather than manually removing bacteria and diseased tissue, the light simply vaporizes it. Better yet, it creates no heat, sound, or vibration while doing so, meaning the patient basically feels nothing in the chair. Recovery afterward tends to be faster and shorter compared to the traditional approach as well.
Antibiotic Treatment

Gum disease bacteria like to hide in hard-to-reach places, and antibiotic therapy allows us to be extra thorough in removing them. Taking the form of a prescription mouthwash you use a few times a day at home (for a period of a few weeks or months), it lets you benefit from professional-level care daily, ensuring the infection doesn’t come back.
